A Brief Early History of Oak Mound Evangelical Church
Rev. O.D. Harman’s third assignment with the Evangelical United Brethren Churches was at the South Chestnut Evangelical United Brethren Church in Clarksburg, WV where he served from 1961 until the fall of 1967. Unhappy with the union of the Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Methodist Church, O.D. was basically removed from the pulpit on a Sunday morning and a group of about 200 folks met that Sunday evening at the little white church on Washington Street. But, Rev. Harman had a dream of building a new church with a new congregation and was determined to fulfil this dream with God’s help. The land was purchased, an architect was consulted, certain dimensions and restrictions and requirements were given. There were 250 charter members of the Oak Mound First Evangelical Congregational Church, an independent, Biblical church, which was organized in 1968. The land was purchased on September 6, 1968. The parsonage was completed on June 15, 1969. The sanctuary, which will seat more than 500 people, was completed in August 1970 and dedicated on November 1, 1970 with 392 in attendance The loan and mortgage amount was paid off in 1976. This note burning service was celebrated on July 20, 1976. Later, the gym was dedicated December 2, 1977. The church has had six pastors during its history: O.D. Harman (1968 to 1991), Tony Scoglio (1991 to 1993), Paul Southerlan (1994 to 2005), Bob Phillips (2006 to 2011), Dave Baker (2011 to 2018), and Steve DeLay (2018 to the Present). God has continued to bless Oak Mound through the years as the church has honored Him, stood strong on His Word, and proclaimed the Gospel throughout the world.
